Madagascar’s lower house of parliament voted on Tuesday to impeach President Andry Rajoelina for “desertion of duty.” The presidency, however, immediately dismissed the session as “devoid of any legal basis.”
The resolution passed with “130 votes in favour,” which was well above the two-thirds constitutional threshold required in the 163-member chamber.
This marks a forceful condemnation of the leader, who has “gone into hiding after weeks of street demonstrations over the island nation’s governance.”
