The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to all Americans in anticipation of a planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The demonstration, organized under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is expected to gather crowds at Eagle Square and the Central Business District.
The planned protest was announced on October 9 by activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, via his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Sowore described the planned march to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa as a “historic” and peaceful demonstration aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, who has been held since June 2021.
The activist wrote: “We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 am.”
In a statement released on its website on Friday, the Embassy cautioned that the protest could result in “disruptions and potential violence.”
It strongly advised US citizens to avoid the protest areas and restrict movement across the city, stating: “The US Embassy in Abuja informs US citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20th, 2025, in Abuja.”
The alert continued: “There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District. The Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to avoid this area and to severely limit all movement throughout the city on Monday, October 20th,” the statement read in part.
With safety as the main concern, the Embassy provided specific measures, recommending: “The Embassy recommends children in Abuja stay home from school and domestic staff who travel from outside of Abuja to stay home as well,” it added.
Americans in Nigeria were urged to take “heightened security precautions.”
The advisory continued with general safety instructions: “Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.”
Furthermore, US citizens were reminded to monitor local news, maintain a “low profile,” and remain vigilant in public spaces like “shopping centres, movie theatres, and places of worship.”
