Court Stops #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an interim injunction that forbids human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and others from “organising or participating” in the planned October 20 protest demanding the release of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The order was granted following an ex parte application filed by the Federal Government through the Nigeria Police Force, which sought to preempt the planned demonstration in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This legal action coincided with a security alert issued by the United States Embassy, which had already “cautioned its citizens to stay away from the protest locations” in the FCT.

In the ruling delivered by Justice M. G. Umar in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/2202/2025, the court specifically barred Sowore, the Take It Back Movement, the #RevolutionNow group, and “persons unknown” from participating in, promoting, or organizing the protest.

Confirming the development, Sowore, a former presidential candidate, alleged that the injunction was issued “in chambers” after the judge had earlier declined to grant the same request “in open court.”

Sowore stated on his social media page: “After initially declining to grant an an ex parte motion to stop our planned protest in open court, the judge reportedly granted it in chambers, imposing a ban on protests at Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly, and the Unity Fountain in Abuja,”.
