Osinbajo Leads ECOWAS Election Observation Mission To Cote d’Ivoire

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has named Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who formerly served as Nigeria’s Vice President, to head its Election Observation Mission for the forthcoming presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire.

The news was made public by the ECOWAS Secretariat in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

The election itself is set for Oct. 25.

This mission, which will be deployed from Oct. 19 to Oct. 29, aligns with the guidelines outlined in the “ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.”

As the leader of the Mission, Mr Osinbajo is tasked with guiding a group of eminent West Africans” whose duties include:

  • “engaging key national stakeholders to support a peaceful and credible electoral process.”
  • “engaging stakeholders towards fostering cooperation with other international and domestic observer groups.”
  • “assessing the conduct of the polls.”

The statement emphasizes that sending this Observation Mission demonstrates ECOWAS’s unwavering commitment to promoting peace, stability, and credible elections in the sub-region.
