Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has listed the former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, as a key witness in his ongoing alleged terrorism trial.
Kanu filed a fresh motion, personally signed by him and dated October 20, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, assuring the court he is prepared to begin his defense as previously ordered.
The application, filed on October 21, is titled: “Notice of Number and Names of Witnesses to be Called by the Defendant and Request for Witness Summons/Subpoena and the Variation of the Time Within Which to Defend the Counts/Charges against the Defendant.”

The motion was filed pursuant to the order of this honourable court made on the 16th day of October 2015, directing the defendant to commence his defence on the 24th day of October 2025.
The IPOB leader informed the court of his plan to call a total of 23 witnesses, separated into two groups: those he terms “ordinary but material witnesses,” and a second group of “vital and compellable” witnesses who will be “summoned under Section 232 of the Evidence Act, 2011.”
Given the number of people he intends to call, Kanu requested the court grant a 90-day timeframe to allow him to conclude his defense.

Kanu told the court that he will “testify on his own behalf, providing a sworn account of the facts, denying the allegations, and explaining the political context of his statements and actions.”
Among the high-profile individuals Kanu listed as “compellable witnesses” are:
- Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike
- Former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd)
- Former Chief of Army Staff, Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd)
- Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State
- Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo
- Minister of Works, Dave Umahi
- Immediate-past Governor of Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu
- Immediate-past Director General (DG), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar
- Former DG of the State Security Service, Yusuf Bichi
- The former AGF, Abubakar Malami
- “Several witnesses” whose identities were not revealed.
Kanu pledged to provide the sworn statements of all voluntary witnesses to this honourable court, and to notify the prosecution within a reasonable time, and assured that no precious time of the honourable court would be delayed.
He also promised that the proceedings would demonstrate that justice is not only done but manifestly seen to have been done.
The latest motion follows a motion of preliminary objection Kanu filed on Thursday, challenging the court’s jurisdiction to continue the trial, filed the same day a court-empanelled team of medical experts reported he was medically fit to stand trial.
