Bail Conditions Court Gave Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Brother, Others

A Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to human rights activist and SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, along with several other protesters arrested during the recent ‘#FreeNnamdiKanuNow’ demonstration in the Federal Capital Territory.

The group granted bail includes Aloy Ejimakor, the counsel for the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and 11 other individuals.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’I’d, issued the bail order on Friday after the defendants were arraigned on charges of “unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.”

According to the ruling, the court granted Sowore and the other protesters bail in the sum of ₦500,000 each.

This is subject to the following conditions:

  • Presenting a verified National Identification Number (NIN).
  • Presenting their three-year tax clearance certificates.
  • Submitting their passports.

Sowore himself was arrested on Thursday by Nigeria Police Force operatives shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja.

His arrest, which was captured in online videos, drew “widespread criticism from civil society organisations and human rights groups” who condemned it as yet “another attempt to suppress dissent and silence activism.”
