Wike Reacts As Kanu Names Him Among “Compellable Witnesses” For His Defence

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he has not received any official invitation to appear as a witness in the ongoing terrorism trial against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Wike was responding during his monthly media chat on Friday to news reports that the detained separatist leader had listed him, along with other high-profile Nigerians, as a potential witness.

The Minister clarified that he could not simply show up in court just because he “read on the pages of newspapers that he had been listed as one of the witnesses.”

He maintained that if he is “duly invited or subpoenaed” to appear in court, he “must obey the court” and “would do that.”

Wike emphasized that the invitation must be formal: “Nobody has asked me any questions. Nobody has subpoenaed me. So because somebody said I am a witness, therefore, I’m going to run. No, you don’t do that.”

He reiterated, “If I am found, if I am subpoenaed to come and give a witness, or to give evidence, I must obey the court. I must appear, not on pages of newspapers.”

Wike also noted that it is not his place to question the reasons for his potential involvement.

He stated: “Nobody does that. I don’t want to ask the facts, why I should be in this case.”

He concluded with a firm assurance: “You go to the judge, you ask him the question. But if I am invited to come, go home and sleep. I will be there.”

He further listed current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nyesom Nwike, his Works’ counterpart, Dave Umahi, and the immediate past governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu.

He also listed the immediate past Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, the immediate past Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, his then-collegue at the State Security Service, SSS, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, and several witnesses whose identities he didn’t reveal.
