Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, revealed on Tuesday that the United States of America has revoked his visa, temporarily preventing him from entering the country.
Speaking at a media briefing held at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos Island, Soyinka said he was unaware of any action on his part that could have led to the decision.
He explained that he convened the press meeting to inform those in the U.S. expecting him for upcoming events not to waste their time.
“I have no visa; I am obviously banned from the United States. If anyone wishes to see me, they know where to find me,” he told journalists.

The reason for the visa revocation remains unclear, as Soyinka himself admitted he had no explanation.
He disclosed that the U.S. Consulate informed him of the decision in a letter dated October 23, 2025, stating:“This letter serves as official notification by the United States Consulate General in Lagos that the nonimmigrant visa listed below has been revoked pursuant to the authority contained in U.S. Department of State regulations.”
The letter, issued by the Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) Section, offered no further details.
Expressing his puzzlement, Soyinka said, “I’ve been reflecting on my past—have I ever broken any law in the U.S.? Do I have any criminal or misdemeanor record? I can’t find anything that would justify this action.”

Thank you to the US government who has inadvertently helped our Tourism to thrive as foreigners who needs Professor Soyinka can now visit Nigeria to see him thereby increasing our Tourism revenue. It should not be a point of discouragement but a sign that Elders with high Wisdom should stay home and let the young ones come visiting.
