President Bola Tinubu has officially decorated the newly appointed service chiefs with their new ranks during a brief ceremony held in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The following military leaders were decorated, with their wives assisting them during the ceremony:
- The new Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede (formerly Lieutenant General), was elevated to the rank of General.
- The new Chief of Army Staff, Wahidi Shaibu (formerly Major General), was decorated with the rank of Lieutenant General.
- The Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abbas (formerly Rear Admiral), was decorated as Vice Admiral.
- The Chief of Air Staff, Kelvin Aneke (formerly Air Vice Marshal), was decorated with the rank of Air Marshall.
- The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Emmanuel Undiendeye (formerly Major General), who was retained by the President, was also elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General.
In his address to the service chiefs, President Tinubu issued a direct mandate, urging them to be “innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous” in their duties.
He emphasized the nation’s urgent desire for security, stating that “Nigerians are in a hurry to celebrate peace and expect results, not excuses.”
The President also stressed the importance of unified action, advising them to “work together, deploying technology where necessary, and defeat the enemy once and for all.”
Speaking on behalf of the decorated service chiefs, General Olufemi Oluyede pledged their full commitment. He promised to “combat terrorism and criminality to ensure Nigeria’s safety and economic growth.” General Oluyede concluded by pledging the service chiefs’ “loyalty to the President and support for democracy.”
The ceremony was witnessed by several high-ranking government officials, including the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima; the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
Other dignitaries present were the Deputy President of the Senate, Jubril Barau; the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
