The United States Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, announced that the Department of War is getting ready to take “action in Nigeria” due to accounts of attacks being carried out against Christians within the country.
Hegseth made his comments in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, which was a direct reply to President Donald Trump’s previous statements that threatened military involvement over the alleged “persecution of Christians in Nigeria.”
In his post, Hegseth affirmed the president’s position, writing, “Yes sir. The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria — and anywhere — must end immediately. The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”

President Trump had earlier made a threat to launch “attacks in Nigeria” in response to what he referred to as “purported anti-Christian violence,” stating that he had ordered the newly renamed Department of War to “prepare for possible action.”
In a separate social media post, also on Saturday, Trump warned that the United States would “immediately cut off all assistance” to the African nation “if the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
Trump further suggested that the U.S. “may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” although he did not name the groups or specify the “atrocities” he was alluding to.
He concluded his post by stating: “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
