Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong Retires From International Football Weeks Before AFCON

Nigerian captain William Troost-Ekong has officially retired from international football.

This decision comes just days after he had been named in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is scheduled to begin on December 21st.

Troost-Ekong, who has been a mainstay with the Super Eagles since 2015, announced his departure in a video post on his X handle on Thursday evening.

In the video, he simply stated: “Today, I am announcing my retirement from international football.”

The defender, who was born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and a Dutch mother, noted that representing the three-time African champions was an “honour.”
