The Federal High Court in Abuja has declined an urgent application filed by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, which sought his immediate transfer from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a facility within the Federal Capital Territory or Nasarawa State.
Kanu, acting through the Legal Aid Council, filed an ex-parte application requesting the court to direct the Federal Government or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to move him to either the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja or the Keffi Custodial Centre in Nasarawa.
As an alternative, he requested a transfer to any custodial center within the court’s jurisdiction—including Suleja or Keffi—to ensure he could effectively pursue his legal appeal.

He argued that the 700-kilometer distance from Sokoto to Abuja rendered his “constitutional right of appeal impracticable.”
However, during Monday’s proceedings, Justice James Omotosho rejected the request.
The judge ruled that an order of such significance could not be issued without first hearing from the Federal Government.
Justice Omotosho directed Kanu to convert his ex-parte application into a motion on notice and serve all relevant parties to ensure a fair hearing for both sides.
Consequently, the judge fixed January 27, 2026, as the date to hear the formal motion.
