The Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, revealed that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s defection to the Accord Party (A) was intentionally delayed until after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s convention in Ibadan had concluded.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Alimi stated that his principal had actually completed the move earlier but held back the official announcement. The commissioner offered a quoted statement clarifying the timeline:
“He resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party on November 4.
He had actually joined the Accord Party by November 6, but he delayed the unveiling because of the convention of the PDP, which was going on,” the commissioner said on Wednesday.
He explained that the governor did not want “to be seen as part of the people who disrupted the event,” having chosen to leave the PDP because “the leadership crisis heightened.”

Governor Adeleke formally joined the Accord Party on Tuesday, several weeks after he resigned from the PDP, the platform on which he was elected as governor.
The primary reason cited by the governor for his departure was the party’s persistent crisis.
His resignation letter, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North Local Government, Osun State, stated:“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect.”
His departure contributes to the growing number of governors and major figures leaving the PDP amid the national-level crisis that has resulted in two distinct leadership factions.
One of these factions, supported by Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo State) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State), held the convention in Ibadan despite conflicting court rulings regarding the event.
According to Commissioner Alimi, Governor Adeleke was driven to the Accord Party by a fear that his ambitions were at risk if he remained with the PDP.
He reiterated: “He left the People’s Democratic Party because the leadership crisis was unending.”
Alimi justified the governor’s new platform:“Yesterday, the Governor unveiled Accord because, looking at their manifesto, it goes in line with good governance that Adeleke is delivering, and everybody since yesterday has actually welcomed him and given kudos to Governor Ademola Adeleke for going to Accord.”
Despite his defection, Alimi confirmed that Governor Adeleke’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election remains firm. He stated that this support “is no longer news for anybody,” adding:“Even when we were in the People’s Democratic Party, we adopted the President [Tinubu] for a second term,” the commissioner said. “When you trace the root of Mr President, you trace it to Osun state. He is one of us, and we have to give him the necessary support.”
