Tension has escalated among residents of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, following reports that Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo collapsed on Thursday afternoon and was quickly taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.
The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. while the Deputy Governor was in his office, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Eyewitnesses indicated that Senator Ewhrudjakpo appeared to be in a “critical condition” when he was rushed into the hospital’s emergency wing.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding his current status: while some hospital sources claim Ewhrudjakpo “has been stabilised in the ICU,” other unconfirmed reports have “speculated that he might not have survived.”

As of press time, no official statement has been released concerning his condition or the cause of the health scare, though medical sources suggested it could be “cardiac-related.”
A source close to the Deputy Governor attributed the incident to his demanding workload, saying: “He’s a workaholic; he really needs to find time to rest.”
Security operatives have since sealed off the hospital premises as top government officials arrived to assess the situation and express their solidarity.
Despite repeated attempts, the Deputy Governor’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, could not be reached for comment.
Nevertheless, medical personnel at FMC assured The Guardian correspondent that Ewhrudjakpo “is receiving the best possible care and is currently stable.”
