What Senate Did To Omokri As Oshiomhole, Ndume Clash Over His Ambassadorial Screening

A “rowdy session” broke out in the Senate on Thursday during the screening of ambassadorial nominee Reno Omokri, as the proceedings briefly descended into a “heated confrontation” between two lawmakers.

The tension began after a motion was introduced recommending that Omokri and several other nominees be permitted to “take a bow and leave” without extensive questioning, following standard Senate tradition.

Senator Ali Ndume insisted that this motion must be seconded before any comments or debate could be allowed.

However, Senator Adams Oshiomhole “strongly objected,” demanding he be allowed to speak before the motion was seconded.

Oshiomhole argued that Omokri’s nomination could not simply be “glossed over,” citing what he described as raging issues in the public domain.

He attempted to make his case by stating:“I think I need to speak on this in the public interest because we cannot pretend we have not heard the stories,”

Despite this, Senator Ndume repeatedly interrupted, asserting that the Senate’s established rules required that the pending motion be seconded before any debate could proceed.

As both lawmakers fiercely maintained their positions, the chamber briefly fell into “chaos,” with Senators trading harsh words and shouting across the aisle.

The exchange eventually deteriorated into open insults, forcing the presiding officer to intervene and call for order.

Once calm was finally restored, Reno Omokri was not asked any questions. Senator Joel Onowakpo Thomas seconded the initial motion, which effectively brought the dispute to an end.

The Senate then upheld the motion, allowing the nominees, including Reno Omokri, to take a bow and leave.
