Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has announced a Christmas bonus of ₦150,000 for every civil servant in the state for the 2025 festive season.
Governor Nwifuru made the announcement on Sunday during a church service held at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki.
He stated that this gesture aligns with his administration’s commitment to enhancing the “welfare of civil servants,” despite the state facing “dwindling revenue accruing to the state in the past year.”
During the event, the Governor also addressed and “dispelled rumours of lethargy” concerning the progress of the Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Flyover, popularly known as VANCO, an infrastructure project described as a “monumental infrastructural marvel” of his administration.

He highlighted the uniqueness of the project, stating:“You cannot find any state in Nigeria that is doing such a flyover currently.”
Explaining the challenging “construction rigours inherent in the massive project,” which he noted will “automatically alter the ugly scenes and give the state a facelift when completed,” Nwifuru criticized the “social media contractors’ cloudy view of the project.”
He maintained that his administration is dedicated to ensuring the state is recognized “in the comity of nations with advanced and modern infrastructures.”
The Governor underscored the historical motivation behind the project, saying:“We are doing it not because we have money. We are doing it because we want to sign our signature in the annals of history.”
He added that Ebonyi State aims to be “referenced in the global map of good governance characterized by modern infrastructure.”
This bonus follows an earlier welfare measure in August, when the Governor increased the minimum wage by ₦20,000, raising the new pay for public servants to ₦90,000 with immediate effect, in line with his administration’s ‘People’s Charter of Needs Agenda.’
This state-level increase surpasses the national minimum wage of ₦70,000, which was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024.
