Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Qualification Hopes Alive As FIFA Investigates ‘Ineligible Players’ In DR Congo Squad

The Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup dreams have been handed a surprise lifeline.

FIFA is currently investigating the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) over allegations of fielding ineligible players during the African playoffs.

Nigeria was originally eliminated by DR Congo in a high-stakes penalty shootout for the intercontinental qualifying slot.

However, that outcome is now being questioned following reports that nine players on the Congolese squad may have violated international eligibility rules.

The core of the investigation centers on dual citizenship laws.

Since DR Congo generally does not recognize dual nationality, players who switched allegiances must formally renounce their previous citizenship according to both local law and FIFA statutes.

FIFA is investigating whether these players completed the necessary administrative steps or if they were fielded illegally based on technicalities regarding their passports and age limits.

FIFA regulations state that having a national passport is not enough to prove eligibility; players must also meet specific domestic and international legal criteria.

There are also specific concerns regarding the documentation of one player who had previously rejected an international call-up.

If FIFA finds DR Congo guilty of these breaches, the sanctions could be severe. Potential outcomes include forfeiting matches, which could theoretically overturn the playoff result and put Nigeria back in the tournament.

While total expulsion of a team is rare, the Super Eagles remain on standby for a final verdict that could change everything.
