Defection: Makinde Announces Decision Concerning APC At Lai Mohammed’s Book Launch

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has put an end to rumors suggesting he might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reasserting his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at a book launch for former Information Minister Lai Mohammed, Makinde clarified his political stance amid a wave of opposition governors moving to the ruling party.

Addressing the speculation directly, the governor declared:“I am not APC, and I am not about to become APC.”

Makinde argued that the nation’s progress hinges on genuine cooperation across party lines rather than constant switching.

He contended that the country’s divisions are largely the product of “elite ambitions” rather than the desires of the common people, who he believes seek unity but are often manipulated for personal political gain.

The governor spoke out against the “winner-takes-all” approach to governance, warning that it leads to exclusion and damages national unity. Instead, he advocated for an “elite consensus” focused on solving modern problems rather than dwelling on historical grievances.

Reflecting on his own journey and the nature of power, Makinde observed that political victory is ultimately a matter of “God and timing.”

He noted that even prominent figures, including himself and former President Muhammadu Buhari, faced electoral defeats before eventually reaching office.

He concluded by urging for new governance frameworks that prioritize “fairness, inclusion and stability” to meet Nigeria’s current needs.
