Tinubu Renames Federal University Of Sciences After Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, in honor of the late renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

The decision aims to recognize the Sheikh’s “immense contributions to faith, education, and leadership.”

During a condolence visit to Bauchi State on Saturday, December 20, 2025, the President officially announced the change. Paying tribute to the late cleric, Tinubu stated: From today onward, I announce this change of name to immortalise him. The Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, will from today be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University. May God bless his memory.”

The President described the Sheikh as a “Nigerian conscience who worked so hard on the path of Almighty Allah, preaching the word, the sermon, the knowledge, and the values of honesty, integrity, and great character.”

President Tinubu arrived at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi, where he was received by Governor Bala Mohammed, alongside Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and senior officials including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Health Minister Ali Pate.

The presidential entourage included House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni.

Governor Mohammed expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing the renaming as “a great honour to Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole.”

He previously characterized the Sheikh’s passing in late November as a “profound national loss,” praising his lifelong commitment to peace and interfaith harmony.

A statement from the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, quoted the governor as saying: “Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship. He embodied deep faith, humility, and wisdom throughout his remarkable life.”

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the supreme leader of the Tijjaniyya order in Nigeria, was born in 1927 and dedicated over 70 years to Islamic scholarship and Qur’anic exegesis.
