The Nigerian government lauded the late dos Santos as a “distinguished statesman” and a “veteran of Angola’s liberation struggle,” highlighting his pivotal role in the nation’s political evolution.

Throughout his extensive career, he served as Vice Minister, Minister, Prime Minister, Vice President, and President of the National Assembly.

The official statement from the Ministry emphasized his continental influence:“The late Fernando dos Santos was not only a pillar of Angolan stability but also a respected voice in the Southern African region and across the African continent. His commitment to national unity, reconciliation, and development resonates deeply with our own continental aspirations for peace and progress.”

On behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the citizens of Nigeria, the Ministry extended heartfelt sympathies to President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the dos Santos family, and the people of Angola.

“We pray that the Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn his passing,” the statement concluded.

Born on March 5, 1950, and a cousin to the late former President José Eduardo dos Santos, “Nando” was a prominent figure within the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

In honor of his legacy, President Lourenço declared a one-day national mourning period for today, December 22, 2025, to coincide with his funeral service at the Alto das Cruzes cemetery.
