In a major strategic shift, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the people of Rivers State to provide “massive votes” for both President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
This move signals the party’s successful consolidation of power across the South-South region following Governor Fubara’s recent high-profile defection from the PDP.
Speaking on Monday during the commissioning of the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Elimgbu, the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, described Fubara’s alignment with the ruling party as a mutual victory.

He emphasized that the governor’s performance is now a direct reflection of the party’s success.
“I congratulate our governor, I congratulate our party because when the governor is doing well, it simply means that our party is doing well,” Basiru stated in a video shared by Rivers State Television.
“But the only way you can compensate the governor, compensate our party people of Rivers State, is to continue to vote for our party, the APC, in all elections.”
The APC leadership is now positioning Fubara as the party’s primary political leader in the state, a move that significantly threatens the long-standing dominance of his predecessor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
By embracing Fubara, the APC national body appears to be sidelining Wike’s influence in Rivers politics to ensure a unified front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Basiru expressed total confidence that Rivers State would deliver an overwhelming mandate for the APC in future polls:“And I know that in the fullness of time, in the general election coming, the votes for our party, the vote for our governor, the vote for our president, will be very massive in Rivers State.”
Fubara’s defection came after months of intense political turmoil, including a split legislature and impeachment threats, which eventually led to a six-month state of emergency. His transition to the APC has now placed all states in the South-South region under the control of the ruling party.
There are strong indications that the APC is preparing to grant Fubara an automatic return ticket for a second term.
This aligns with earlier statements by ambassadorial nominee Ita Enang, who noted a consensus within the party to prioritize the return of defecting governors.
