In a significant political distancing, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has openly challenged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the political direction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking during a media chat in Ibadan on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Makinde insisted that he would not follow Wike’s lead in supporting President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
He urged his former ally to respect the rights of others to make their own political decisions.

The Governor revealed details of a private meeting involving himself, the President, and the former Rivers State Governor, where Wike allegedly made a bold commitment to the President.
“I was in a meeting with President Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, and others when Wike volunteered to hold the PDP for Tinubu against 2027, and I was in shock,” Makinde disclosed. “Wike can support the president in 2027, but I will not.”
Makinde emphasized that his primary focus is the preservation of their party, stating that his immediate goal is to ensure that “PDP survives.”
He appealed to Wike to “allow us to make our choice,” signaling a definitive end to the unified front once held by the G5 governors.
While both men were prominent members of the G5 group—which included former governors Samuel Ortom, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Okezie Ikpeazu—and supported Tinubu in 2023, their relationship has completely fractured.
This fallout reached a peak recently when the PDP, backed by Makinde, held a convention in Oyo State where Wike and several others were suspended for alleged anti-party activities.
Despite the suspension and the accusations, Wike has maintained that he remains a dedicated member of the PDP while simultaneously reaffirming his loyalty to President Tinubu’s 2027 ambitions.
