Several Tomahawk cruise missiles reportedly failed to hit their intended targets during a recent U.S. strike on Islamic State positions in Nigeria, according to Militarnyi.
At least three missiles are said to have fallen short, with local residents finding debris and unexploded warheads the morning after the operation.
Photos of the remnants were shared by conflict researcher Trevor Ball from investigative journalism group Bellingcat, showing fragments consistent with Tomahawk cruise missiles, including intact warhead components.

The strike followed a directive from U.S. President Donald Trump, who ordered what he described as a “powerful and lethal strike” against Islamic State targets in Nigeria.
Local reports indicate that the attack also impacted areas near Offa in Kwara State, raising questions about targeting precision and missile performance.
Tajudeen Alabi, a former special assistant to the Kwara State governor on security matters, confirmed the incident to the BBC.
“Residents heard explosions three times at around 9:00 p.m.,” Alabi said.
He noted that the missiles damaged buildings in multiple locations, with no fatalities reported at the time, although some people sustained injuries.
“At least about five structures were destroyed in different locations. We saw some objects in one popular hotel we call Offa Central Hotel. It looked like a bomb,” he added.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed that strikes had occurred, emphasizing that they were conducted in cooperation with the United States.
The ministry stated that the joint operation resulted in “pinpoint strikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria and airstrikes in the northwest.”
Photographs of the debris show WDU-36/B high-explosive fragmentation warheads weighing around 310 kilograms, along with missile wing parts.
Militarnyi reported that the presence of unexploded warheads likely indicates a technical malfunction rather than intentional self-destruction.
The outlet explained that if a Tomahawk missile detects a deviation from its programmed flight path, its fuze can prevent detonation, stopping the warhead from exploding on impact.
This safety mechanism is meant to reduce unintended damage but can leave unexploded ordnance on the ground.
Tomahawk cruise missiles are commonly used by the U.S. military for long-range precision strikes and are typically launched from naval platforms.
They follow pre-programmed routes to strike fixed targets with high accuracy.
While missile failures are uncommon, they are not unprecedented, particularly in complex operational settings.
