The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially attributed the fatal accident involving boxing champion Anthony Joshua to excessive speeding and a dangerous overtaking maneuver.
The crash, which occurred around noon on Monday near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State, involved a black Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck.
According to a statement from the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, preliminary investigations revealed the tragic scale of the incident.

Out of the five adult males involved in the collision, two died instantly.
While Joshua was rescued with minor injuries, another victim required emergency medical care.
The FRSC detailed the immediate aftermath:“The injured victim was evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu.”
Explaining how the crash occurred, the FRSC noted that the driver of the Lexus lost control while attempting to pass another vehicle at high speed.
“The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was duly notified for further investigation and necessary documentation. Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.”
The Corps emphasized that these specific traffic violations continue to be a deadly trend on Nigerian roads.
“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, offered his sympathies to the victims’ families while acknowledging the boxing star’s survival.
“On behalf of the entire Management and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps, heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased, and we wish the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery.”
In light of the tragedy, the FRSC reminded the public of its ongoing mission to minimize road fatalities through strict enforcement and education.
“The public is reminded that the Corps remains resolute in its mandate to ensure safer roads, prompt emergency response, and sustained public education aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country,” the statement concluded.
