In a fresh escalation of the political hostilities in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not secure him a second term in 2027.
Speaking over the weekend during a visit to Enohia Local Government Area, Wike dismissed the Governor’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a tactical move that lacks electoral weight.
The rift between the two leaders has previously led to the burning of the State House of Assembly and a six-month state of emergency.

Addressing the crowd, Wike insisted that loyalty to the President was already a settled matter in the state and mocked those now claiming to support the administration.
“The issue is not whether you support Tinubu or not. That decision was taken long ago. Nobody needs to come here to tell me they are for Tinubu. Supporting Tinubu will not earn anyone a ticket,” Wike said.
He further highlighted that the state lawmakers loyal to him were the true pioneers of the President’s mandate in Rivers, long before the Governor’s recent shift.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly has done its job. They were the first in Nigeria to declare that, on your mandate, they would stand. So the Tinubu issue is no longer an issue. Do you understand me? Who in Rivers State is not for Tinubu? That alone cannot guarantee anyone a ticket,” he added.

Wike also questioned the sincerity of those now pledging loyalty to the President, pointing out their past actions in court and their performance during the general elections.
“The same people who recently made public declarations are the same ones who took the Assembly to court, seeking to have their seats declared vacant. All those now chanting ‘on your mandate we stand’ failed when it mattered most. They could not vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We have never wavered in our support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. When we take decisions, we do so out of conviction, not because of what others are doing,” Wike stated.
The conflict continues despite a previous peace agreement brokered by the Presidency, which allegedly included a condition that Fubara would not seek re-election.
While Fubara recently moved to the APC to pledge his full support to Tinubu, Wike’s latest remarks suggest that the battle for the 2027 governorship ticket remains far from settled.
