As the political landscape shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is reportedly considering a massive strategic alliance.
According to THISDAY, Kwankwaso is exploring a merger with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This move comes as Kwankwaso’s political grip on Kano State faces a major challenge: his protégé, Governor Abba Yusuf, is set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, taking most of the State House of Assembly with him.

While the APC continues to expand its dominance—now boasting 28 governors following the recent defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang—the opposition is attempting to consolidate.
Sources indicate that Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya movement are in “quiet negotiations” to join the ADC, which has recently become the gathering point for heavyweight politicians.
Peter Obi officially joined the ADC on Wednesday, moving alongside several lawmakers and opposition figures. He joins a formidable roster that now includes Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola.
The planned exit of Governor Abba Yusuf to the APC has caused a “sharp disagreement” within the Kwankwasiyya fold. Reports suggest that a defection ceremony is scheduled in Abuja, expected to be attended by:

Meanwhile, the PDP has acknowledged the need for a united front, stating that while they are resolving internal leadership legalities, the “opposition must agree to work together to defeat the ruling party.”
