In a significant legal turnaround, the Federal Government has officially dropped the criminal defamation charges previously brought against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.
Court records reveal that the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed a “notice of discontinuance” on December 12, 2025, which was recently processed by the Federal High Court.
This legal move effectively ends the criminal proceedings that had shadowed the senator for several months.

The litigation was triggered by separate petitions from two high-profile figures: Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.
The charges were primarily centered on comments the senator made during an appearance on the popular television program Politics Today. During the interview, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Senator Akpabio and Yahaya Bello were involved in a conspiracy against her.
“It was part of the meeting, the discussions that Akpabio had with Yahaya Bello that night to eliminate me. Let’s ask the Senate President, why in the first instance did he withdraw my security, if not to make me vulnerable to attacks. He then emphasized that I should be killed, but I should be killed in Kogi,” she stated during the broadcast.
Prior to her own arraignment, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had reportedly reached out to law enforcement with concerns for her safety.
Despite petitions earlier submitted by the senator to the Inspector-General of Police, alleging threats to her life, no action was taken on those complaints.
Instead, she faced prosecution for criminal defamation and cyberbullying based on the claims she made publicly.
The government’s witness list for the trial included notable names such as Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, Senator Ekpenyong Asuquo, and Reno Omokri.
The withdrawal follows a recent public gesture by the Senate President. Speaking during a New Year Mass at the Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo, Akpabio announced that he was moving toward reconciliation.
On Thursday, Godswill Akpabio, the senate president, said he had directed his lawyers to withdraw all court cases he instituted against individuals over alleged defamation, citing the counsel of his priest as the inspiration for his decision.
The official filing by the Attorney-General’s office brings a formal end to the federal government’s involvement in the matter, granting the senator full legal clearance.
