Ghana Government Declares Friday January 9, 2026 Public Holiday

The Ghanaian government, through the Ministry of Interior, has officially declared Friday, January 9, 2026, as a public holiday to mark Constitution Day.

Although the anniversary technically falls on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the government has moved the observance to the end of the week.

In a statement released to the public on January 2, 2026, officials explained that while January 7 is the statutory date, its midweek occurrence led to the change.

“Accordingly, His Excellency the President of the Republic, acting by Executive Instrument (E.I.) and in line with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, has directed that the holiday be observed on Friday, January 9, 2026, instead.”

This decision follows a specific government policy designed to shift holidays that fall in the middle of the week to Fridays.

The goal is to allow students and workers to enjoy extended weekends without disrupting productivity during the peak of the workweek.

Constitution Day is celebrated to honor the implementation of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which began the Fourth Republic and established the nation’s current democratic system.

The Ministry has called on the public to recognize the new date and observe the holiday nationwide.

The shift was made possible by the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which grants the President the power to move holidays falling between Tuesday and Thursday to the nearest Friday or Monday.

This new legislation also brought major changes to the calendar, such as reinstating July 1 (Republic Day) and September 21 (Founder’s Day) as public holidays, while officially removing August 4 from the list.
