In a blistering escalation of the political crisis in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to block the 2027 re-election bid of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, claiming that allowing the Governor a second term would result in his own political “burial.”
Addressing a gathering of stakeholders in the Okrika Local Government Area on Saturday, January 3, 2026, Wike emphasized that a definitive stance has been taken regarding the future of the state’s leadership.
“We have made a decision as far as Tinubu is concerned. The other one — no way. Because if we make another mistake, then we will go and bury ourselves politically. I will not allow myself to be buried. I will not allow that mistake again. So everybody should know we have made a decision,” Wike declared.

The Minister’s remarks come as a response to Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his New Year crossover speech, where the Governor reportedly dismissed Wike’s threats as “noise.”
Wike hit back by claiming credit for the Governor’s rise to power and promising to reveal the details of the peace agreement that restored Fubara after the state’s emergency rule.
“We will not make the same mistake again at the state level in 2027, but we will talk about it later when the time comes,” he stated, later adding, “I made him governor even when he was not popular among the people.”

At a separate meeting in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area on Friday, Wike warned the Governor that supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not be enough to save his mandate if he continues to struggle with internal leadership dynamics.
“If you played well with the first one and succeeded, do you think you can succeed with the second one? There cannot be two markets in one day. So, whoever is assuring you that everything will be fine once you sign on your mandate, you are mistaken. All of us have decided to work for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. There is no discussion about that,” Wike said.
Wike further questioned Fubara’s ability to govern effectively, pointing to a breakdown in relationships with other elected officials in the state.
“Someone who cannot relate with the local government chairmen, state assembly members and national assembly members — what kind of leadership do you want to provide?”
The Minister concluded by reiterating his commitment to President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda while maintaining that the local “mistake” of 2023 would be rectified.
“Of course, you know we won’t make the mistake we made last time. We are here to correct the mistake. We will do all we can to ensure that we give Tinubu all the total support that is required,” he added.
