Former DSS DG Daura Declares Intention To Contest Katsina Governorship

Lawal Daura, the former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), has officially entered the 2027 Katsina State governorship race.

Daura cited the state’s declining security and the lackluster performance of the incumbent government as his primary reasons for running.

In a recent interview with DCL Hausa, the former intelligence head revealed that he has wrapped up consultations regarding his candidacy.

While he has not yet named the political party he will join, he promised an announcement in the near future.

Daura explained that his transition from a behind-the-scenes strategist to a partisan politician was driven by intense pressure from stakeholders who are concerned about the state’s safety.

“I was invited to come forward and contribute to addressing the deteriorating security situation in the state by contesting for governorship,” Daura stated.

“Initially, I said I would think about it, but later I realised I could not say no, considering the circumstances under which I was approached.”

In a blunt assessment of his own candidacy, he added:“Honestly, if there was somebody better than me, I would have said we should go to such a person.”

Addressing the current state leadership, Daura suggested that their time is up, citing their inability to handle the state’s crises effectively.

“For the current administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but you should take a break because you can’t continue,” he said.

This declaration is expected to significantly shift the political landscape in Katsina, where the 2027 elections are increasingly being defined by the urgent need to address persistent insecurity.
