In a revealing interview on Thursday, former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu identified Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi as the top contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket in 2027.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Momodu, who has moved from the PDP to the ADC, broke down the qualifications of the potential candidates based on their extensive political experience.
He highlighted the former Vice President as his primary choice, stating:“Today, if you ask me in ADC, there are prominent potential candidates. Number one on the list today will be Alhaji Atiku Abubakar because he was a vice president. He has played at the highest level of being former vice president for eight years. He started contesting the presidency in 1993 when he stepped down for Chief Abiola.”

Momodu then pivoted to the credentials of the former Rivers State Governor and the 2023 Labour Party candidate:“The next person will be Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who has been speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly for eight years. He’s been governor for eight years. He’s been minister for eight years. Then we will go to Peter Obi, who has been a governor of Anambra State also for two terms.”
The publisher and politician urged members of the ADC to prioritize a united front to challenge the current administration, which he criticized for allegedly trending toward a one-party system. He stressed the importance of unity, noting:“We need the cooperation of everybody. That is why we call it a coalition. It’s not a one-man thing, and Nigeria does not recognize independent candidacy.”
All three heavyweights have recently shifted their political bases to the ADC. Atiku Abubakar ended his long tenure with the PDP to join the coalition, while Peter Obi exited the Labour Party to align with the movement.
Rotimi Amaechi, a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu’s government, was among the earliest figures to join the ADC. Together, the trio stands as the core of a newly unveiled opposition coalition aimed at the 2027 polls.
