Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Fubara

The political situation in Rivers State grew increasingly volatile on Thursday as the House of Assembly launched impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The plenary session was led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, during which the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally presented a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the governor.

Citing Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, Jack outlined a seven-point list of accusations.

These include the demolition of the House of Assembly complex, unauthorized budgetary expenditures, the withholding of funds from the Assembly Service Commission, and a failure to comply with a Supreme Court ruling regarding the financial independence of the legislative house. A total of 26 lawmakers signed the petition.

Following the presentation of the notice against Fubara, which the Speaker stated would be officially served to the governor within seven days, Deputy Leader Linda Stewart introduced a separate notice of gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Odu.

The allegations against Odu involve claims of reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds and the obstruction of the Assembly’s constitutional duties.

She is also accused of conspiring to allow individuals to hold office without the required screening by the House of Assembly.

Furthermore, the lawmakers alleged that the deputy governor bypassed the legitimate Rivers State House of Assembly to seek budgetary approval from an unauthorized group.

She was also accused of participating in the seizure of salaries and allowances intended for the House of Assembly and its Service Commission.
