“If They Continue To Kill Christians, It Will Be A Many-Time Strike” – Trump Warns Of More US Strikes In Nigeria

In an interview with The New York Times published on Thursday, United States President Donald Trump indicated that the U.S. might carry out several military interventions in Nigeria if the killing of Christians continues.

When asked if the December 25 operation against Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria was the beginning of a larger military campaign, Trump responded:“I’d love to make it a one-time strike… but if they continue to kill Christians, it will be a many-time strike.”

The Christmas Day strike, which Washington claimed targeted Islamic State affiliates at the request of the Nigerian government, has sparked international debate.

Trump described the intervention as a direct response to the repeated targeting of Christians by extremist groups.

When challenged with data from his senior Africa adviser showing that groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have killed more Muslims than Christians, Trump acknowledged the wider scope of the violence but maintained his focus, stating:“I think that Muslims are being killed also in Nigeria. But it’s mostly Christians.”

The Federal Government of Nigeria has pushed back against the narrative of a genocide against Christians. Officials pointed out that armed groups in the northern region operate with various motives and have killed both Muslims and Christians.

While emphasizing ongoing counter-terrorism cooperation with international allies, the Nigerian government reiterated that violence against any community, regardless of their religious faith, is unacceptable.
