In a significant political shift, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Action People’s Party (APP).
Announcing his decision on Wednesday at his home in Akokwa, Imo State, Ugochinyere explained that his departure was due to the “unending crisis” within the PDP and the failure of all attempts to reform the party.
He reflected on the legal battles and internal resistance he faced, noting:“From the day we started with PDP to this afternoon, we are still in court with our party in a bid to retain the seat that for over fifteen years they never won until we brought victory to them. Now that we survived all these ordeals in the last three, four years, should we try it again? No. Should we test God to see whether we survive?”

The lawmaker expressed deep disappointment in the lack of support from his own party members, some of whom he claimed testified against him during election tribunals.
He described the situation as “very insulting” as the state’s sole federal lawmaker for the party, accusing some leaders of preferring “that the party died while they washed dishes in Port Harcourt.”
Explaining his choice of the APP, he stated:“We want to build. We want to earn every vote. And that’s why we took a political party that we want to build from scratch, filled with energy of young people… It’s on that ground that I have decided to depart from the PDP.”
Beyond party politics, Ugochinyere issued a stern warning to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, urging him to stop attacking the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata.
This comes after a recent exchange where Wike dismissed Mbata as a “local politician.”
Ugochinyere emphasized that any insult to Mbata is an insult to the entire Igbo race:“I want to warn you, that your decision to attack the Igbo nation by insulting the President General of the Igbo nation should be the last… to look at Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General and talk down on a man that the whole Igbo nation find fit to lead the race worldwide is a red line.”
He further cautioned that the President General is a leader “from Antarctica to the last bottom of the earth,” and called on President Tinubu to restrain Wike from further denigrating the Igbo people.
Additionally, Ugochinyere criticized the police for their lack of progress regarding the 2023 attack on his country home, despite the fact that arrested suspects had reportedly made “confessional statements.”
