The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu are actively moving forward. Formal notices detailing allegations of gross misconduct have already been sent to both leaders.
In a formal statement issued on January 9, 2026, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, clarified that the assembly is acting strictly within its legal rights.
The statement confirmed that the process was “fully on course in line with relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

The Assembly further detailed the current status of the proceedings:“The two notices of allegations of gross misconduct brought pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution against the Governor and Deputy Governor have been forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House, while we await their responses. We remain duty-bound to stand by the people and stop infractions on the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other officer of the Rivers State Government,”
The move, which marks the second attempt to remove the pair in less than a year, was initiated during a Thursday plenary session led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
Majority Leader Major Jack outlined seven counts against Governor Fubara, including the destruction of the Assembly complex, spending without budgetary approval, and ignoring a Supreme Court verdict regarding legislative financial independence.
Simultaneously, Deputy Leader Linda Stewart brought charges against Deputy Governor Odu, accusing her of unconstitutional spending and obstructing the legislature.
Despite twenty-six lawmakers signing the notice, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has voiced strong opposition, labeling the move “destabilising and unnecessary.”
Through spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, the APC warned that while the legislature is independent, this path could lead to chaos.
The party dismissed the idea that budget issues were the root cause, pointing out that a ₦1.485 trillion budget was already approved via the National Assembly during the current emergency rule.
The APC has called on the lawmakers to halt the process to “protect the party’s image and maintain development in the state.”
