The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, has announced that High Court Judges in the state are set to return to their courtrooms on Monday, January 13, following the conclusion of the Christmas break.
In a statement issued through the Registrar of the State High Court, David Ihua-Maduenyi, the Chief Judge noted that the judicial officers were permitted to observe their vacation starting from December 23 until January 9, 2026.

According to the announcement, the Chief Judge “urged members of the public to take notice of the resumption date” as regular legal proceedings commence.
The announcement is coming amid fresh impeachment move initiated by the Rivers Assembly against Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.
In the Nigerian constitutional process, the Chief Judge (CJ) of a state plays a critical and independent role that serves as a bridge between the legislative and judicial aspects of an impeachment.
Under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the CJ’s involvement begins only after the House of Assembly has successfully passed a motion to investigate the allegations against a Governor or Deputy Governor.
In the current situation in Rivers with Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, the Chief Judge’s role is particularly sensitive because the Assembly has formally forwarded notices to Governor Fubara and Deputy Odu.
The next constitutional step if the Assembly votes to investigate will be for the Speaker to request that Justice Chibuzor-Amadi constitute a seven-man investigative panel.
