The Rivers Elders and Leadership Forum (RELEF) has voiced its apprehension regarding the impeachment notices served to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Saturday, the Acting Chairman of RELEF and former Deputy Governor of Rivers, Dr. Gabriel Toby, denounced the impeachment attempt.
This development follows an emergency plenary on Wednesday where members of the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated the move.

Dr. Toby cautioned that impeachment is a serious constitutional procedure that should not be used as “an instrument of political vendetta or factional rivalry.”
He characterized the lawmakers’ reasons for seeking the governor’s removal as weak and lacking in constitutional significance or public interest.
He stated:“The allegations against Gov. Fubara appear to be driven by narrow personal interests rather than any sincere concern for good governance in the state. The governor’s mandate was freely given by the electorate and can only be questioned in strict compliance with constitutional provisions, due process, and clear, compelling, and verifiable grounds.”
Toby warned that these actions risk deepening political fractures and damaging public trust in democratic systems.

He noted that such moves could further unsettle the state’s political climate, adding:“Rivers State has yet to fully recover from the political, social and institutional disruptions of the recent emergency rule. Our people are still bearing the consequences of that episode, and the present development risks reopening old wounds and heightening tensions.”
The elder statesman urged the legislators to prioritize the state’s collective welfare over personal or partisan motives and to immediately reconsider their actions to ensure peace and progress.
Reaffirming the forum’s dedication to justice and unity, Dr. Toby concluded:“We will not remain silent in the face of actions capable of threatening the stability, dignity, and future of Rivers State. We appeal for wisdom and restraint to prevail in the overall interest of the people. We urge all stakeholders to allow the state to heal and move forward.”
