Former Ogun ‘First Lady’ Lucia Onabanjo Dies At 100

Madam Onabanjo, who had reached the milestone age of 100 (entering her 101st year), passed away on Monday, January 11, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the family expressed:“deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God”

They celebrated her life as a revered matriarch, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

The family’s announcement further honored her by stating:“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11. We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength and faith she leaves behind.”

Serving as the First Lady of Ogun State from 1979 to 1983, she was a central figure during the state’s early democratic era and remained a steadfast support for her husband throughout his political career.

The family has asked for prayers and privacy as they mourn, noting that burial plans will be shared at a later time.
