Tinubu Reacts As Ex-Ogun First Lady Dies

President Bola Tinubu has sent his condolences to the government of Ogun State and the Onabanjo family following the passing of the state’s former First Lady, Chief Lucia Onabanjo.

The matriarch, who was the wife of Ogun State’s pioneer civilian governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, died on Monday, January 11, 2026, at the age of 100.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 13, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed his deep sympathy for her family, friends, and the people of Ogun State.

President Tinubu lauded the late Chief Lucia Onabanjo for a life dedicated to service and compassion, noting:“Lucia Onabanjo’s strong support for her husband when he served as Ogun State Governor for four years, 1979–1983, was commendable, and her keen interest on issues of children and empowerment of women was exemplary.”

The President highlighted that her “compassionate investments in many lives in her community, the state, and the nation” have left an indelible mark, evidenced by the many tributes shared since her passing.

He further remarked:“I do not doubt that her legacy of charity and kindness will continue to resonate.”

Encouraging the preservation of her values, particularly her dedication to the underprivileged, Tinubu stated:“I urge the Ogun State Government and family members to immortalise her by projecting her legacy of love for the poor and vulnerable.”

Concluding his tribute, the President offered prayers for the family’s strength and the repose of her soul, saying:“I pray that the Almighty God will receive Lucia Onabanjo’s soul, and continue to strengthen her family.”
