The Federal Government has officially introduced a new “professorial cadre allowance,” providing university professors with a monthly bonus of over ₦140,000.
This incentive is part of a comprehensive welfare package that also includes a 40 percent salary increase for lecturers across all federal tertiary institutions.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed these details on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today.”

This follows the landmark 2025 agreement reached between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which successfully ended a 16-year stalemate over the 2009 FGN–ASUU renegotiations.
Dr. Alausa highlighted that President Bola Tinubu personally created this specific category of support for senior academics.
He stated:“A professor will now receive a monthly top-up of over ₦140,000, as President Tinubu has created a new category of allowance for academic staff, known as the professorial cadre allowance—an enhanced additional package.”
The Minister further clarified that the nine enhanced Earned Academic Allowances are now strictly defined, ensuring that lecturers understand exactly “who the Federal Government will pay, what they are paid for, and the cost.”
Addressing past concerns regarding the government’s ability to fulfill its promises, Alausa assured the public that the necessary finances are already secured.
He noted that the President was careful not to commit to an agreement that could not be honored:“When we were negotiating the agreement, the President said, ‘I will not give you the go-ahead to go and sign an agreement I know I will not implement.’ As we went back and forth, the key question was: do I have the funding to do this? When the President was completely convinced that he had the funding, he signed off.”
The Minister confirmed that the implementation phase has already begun, with the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission working through late December to release the necessary circulars.
He emphasized:“Today, we have the funding to support the 40 percent salary increase that will be given to lecturers in all tertiary institutions… The circular has been released.”
This historic move is viewed as a major step toward achieving the President’s goal of “quality, accessible, and uninterrupted university education” in Nigeria.
