The Federal High Court in Abuja is scheduled to deliberate on the potential deregistration of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political organizations due to purported constitutional and electoral violations.
This legal challenge, initiated by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), has been set for hearing on February 16, 2026.
The lawsuit, designated as FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2025, targets the ADC, Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party, Action Alliance (AA), and the Action Peoples Party (APP).
The NFFL, comprising former federal and state lawmakers, is petitioning the court to enforce Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the authority to withdraw recognition from parties that fail to meet mandatory performance standards and statutory requirements.

The forum is seeking a “clear and authoritative judicial interpretation” of this section to bolster constitutional compliance within Nigeria’s political landscape.
Hon. Raphael Igbokwe, the National Coordinator of the NFFL, argued that parties failing to meet constitutional thresholds weaken the democratic process.
He stated, “The continued operation of inactive and non-performing political parties erodes the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and dilutes the effectiveness of the party system.”
He further explained that the litigation is “aimed at enforcing the supremacy of the Constitution and restoring discipline and credibility to the political space.”
The NFFL has maintained that its motives are purely legal rather than partisan. “This suit is not politically motivated,” the Forum declared. “It is firmly rooted in the rule of law, constitutional compliance, and the urgent need to sanitise Nigeria’s political environment of parties that exist largely in name but fail to meet basic constitutional and statutory obligations.”
The group also pointed out that an excess of non-compliant parties strains electoral administration and confuses the electorate, adding that “a credible democracy requires a disciplined and accountable party system.”
Concluding their stance, the Forum emphasized that “political parties must not only be registered but must also demonstrate measurable participation and performance as required by law.”
They reaffirmed their dedication to the nation’s democratic institutions, saying, “We remain unwavering in our resolve to uphold the Constitution and promote a credible, accountable and functional multi-party democracy for Nigeria.”
