In a swift turn of events, the four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had previously abandoned the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy have officially rejoined the proceedings.
The lawmakers—Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey, Barile Nwakoh, and Emilia Amadi—announced their reversal during a live broadcast on Friday from the entrance of the Assembly complex.
This move comes just days after they had publicly advocated for a peaceful and “amicable resolution” to the state’s ongoing political turmoil.
Explaining the shift, Sylvanus Nwankwo recalled their earlier plea on January 12 for a “political solution to this impasse.”

However, he claimed that while they sought peace, the executive branch escalated the conflict.
He stated: “During the pendency of this appeal, we found out that the governor and the deputy governor, they have all employed their media boys and aides to continuously attack the Rivers State House of Assembly instead of seeking for the political solution which we offer.”
Based on this, he and Honourable Peter Abbey declared that “the impeachment proceedings should continue.”
Sharing a similar sentiment, Nwakoh and Amadi noted that they returned to the impeachment fold after realizing the governor and deputy governor showed no genuine interest in dialogue.
This development has provided fresh momentum to the Martin Amaewhule-led House, which initiated the process last week based on allegations of “gross misconduct,” specifically the “demolition of the Assembly complex” and the “spending of public funds without legislative approval.”
The latest reversal follows a tense Thursday where the Assembly failed to meet, fueling rumors of internal divisions.
However, members of the House on Friday stood firm, describing the impeachment as “constitutional and the only solution to the political impasse in the state.”
