Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President, has addressed the defection of his son, Abba Abubakar, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), labeling it a “personal choice” that should not be viewed as a “cause for alarm.”
In a statement shared via X on Thursday, the elder Atiku emphasized that diverse political leanings within a family are standard in a democratic society.
He maintained that he respects the individual beliefs of both his children and the general public, stating, “The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.”
He further noted, “As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”

Despite his tolerant stance on his son’s move, Atiku used the opportunity to voice his disapproval of the current administration.
He remarked, “What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to the opposition, saying, “I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress.”
This reaction follows the formal announcement at the National Assembly in Abuja, where Abba Abubakar—legally named Abubakar Atiku Abubakar—was welcomed by Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate.
During the event, Abba expressed his commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election, declaring: “My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, but everyone calls me Abba. I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party, where we worked in 2023, and my decision to join the APC.”
Abba attributed his shift to the leadership of Senator Barau, stating, “Today, I’m here to formally announce my exit from my former party to the APC following the outstanding leadership style and quality of His Excellency, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.”
He concluded by ordering his political structure to mobilize for the ruling party, adding, “With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu.”
