Rivers Assembly Concludes Voting On Fubara And Deputy Impeachment, Gives New Directive To Chief Judge

On Friday, the Rivers State House of Assembly officially requested the State Chief Judge to establish a panel to investigate allegations of “gross misconduct” leveled against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

Following a unanimous vote during a plenary session, the lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to the impeachment proceedings.

Prior to the session, the legislators held a live press conference in Port Harcourt, where they accused the Governor of employing “blackmail” and intimidation against the parliament.

Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol asserted that Fubara “lacked the trust needed to address the crisis rocking the oil-rich state,” further claiming that the Governor’s repeated infringements on the 1999 Constitution left the Assembly with “no other choice but to apply their legislative power by impeaching him from office.”

Despite their hardline stance, the members expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his intervention in the state’s political turmoil.

The move to proceed gained significant strength after the four lawmakers who had previously sought a “political solution” recanted their positions and rejoined the impeachment effort.

After the briefing, the lawmakers entered the chambers to resume formal parliamentary activities.

Upon concluding the vote, Speaker Martin Amaewhule emphasized the collective resolve of the House, stating, “This voting clearly shows the decision of the House,” as he formally called upon the Chief Judge to initiate the investigative panel.
