Recent political reports indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is internally evaluating four influential Northern Christian figures as potential running mates for the 2027 presidential election.
According to various media sources, the names currently in “serious circulation” within the All Progressives Congress (APC) include former Speaker Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Minister of Defence Lt-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah.
Insiders suggest that the President’s team is considering these individuals as part of a strategy to address the “lingering criticism of the Muslim–Muslim ticket” used in the 2023 elections.

This previous arrangement faced scrutiny both domestically and internationally, with some “U.S. officials encouraging more inclusive representation in federal governance.”
While the President possesses the “constitutional freedom to select his running mate from any part of the country” under the 1999 Constitution, there is growing pressure from civil society and Christian associations.
These groups argue that better representation could help address “insecurity in northern Christian communities” and foster national unity.
Conversely, some Northern Muslim groups contend that the security crisis—including attacks by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and bandits—is a “universal, not sectarian” issue affecting all residents of the region.
As the 2027 election cycle approaches, political commentators are debating which of these figures—“Dogara, Musa, Mutfwang or Kukah”—is best suited to champion a “unifying vision capable of driving national peace and shared prosperity.”
Analysts emphasize that the ultimate choice must focus on “stability, economic growth and equal treatment for all citizens” across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
