Court Sacks Abure As LP National Chairman, Gives Fresh Order To INEC

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court Abuja has officially recognized the Usman Nenadi-led exco of the Labour Party (LP), effectively “sacking Julius Abure as the national chairman of the party.”

In his judgment, Justice Lifu cited the “April 4, 2025, verdict of the Supreme Court” as the basis for declaring Senator Nenadi the legitimate leader of the organization. Consequently, the court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to “forthwith, recognize the Senator Usman-led Caretaker Committee as the only valid authority to represent the Labour Party,” until such a time as a national convention is held.

The ruling was the result of a legal action initiated by the Usman faction. Both Abure and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) were “cited as a defendant in the matter.”

Justice Lifu concluded that the evidence confirmed “Abure’s tenure as the national chairman of the LP had since elapsed.”

The judge also rejected Abure’s argument that the dispute was a “non-justiceable” internal party matter.

Instead, the court maintained that establishing the LP caretaker committee was “a necessity” prompted by the previous mandate from the Supreme Court.
