The legal struggle involving the suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi Central, has intensified as Senate President Godswill Akpabio has once more “approached the Supreme Court.”
According to court documents viewed on Thursday, marked SC NO: SC/CV/1111/2025, Akpabio filed an application aimed at regularizing his appeal against previous lower court rulings.
The “Motion on Notice brought pursuant to Order 4 Rules 6 & 16 of the Supreme Court 2024” seeks to sustain his challenge against the July 4, 2025, judgment which “faulted the suspension, describing it as excessive and unconstitutional.”

The conflict traces back to a February 2025 plenary where Akpoti-Uduaghan raised “issues of privilege and alleged procedural breaches.”
Following a recommendation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, she was suspended.
However, the lawmaker successfully argued at the Federal High Court that there was a “breach of her right to a fair hearing and non-compliance with the Senate Standing Orders.”
In his appeal to the apex court, Akpabio is seeking an “extension of time to apply for leave to appeal” and an order “deeming his notice of appeal and brief of argument as properly filed.”
He maintains that the “Senate acted within its powers under Section 60 of the 1999 Constitution,” and argues that as Senate President, he was “not under an obligation to immediately rule on every point of privilege.”
Conversely, Akpoti-Uduaghan continues to insist her “suspension was unlawful and carried out without a fair hearing.” Although she “resumed duties on September 23, 2025, after completing a six-month suspension,” the legal battle persists.
This move by Akpabio comes despite his announcement “barely two weeks” ago that he would “withdraw pending court cases against his adversaries.”
The case, which also involves a “related contempt issue arising from a social media post,” is seen by legal experts as a pivotal moment that “could clarify the limits of legislative discipline and judicial intervention.”
