National Grid Collapses For First Time In 2026

Nigeria has experienced its first National Power Grid failure of the year, plunging various regions into darkness and interrupting the energy supply for millions of individuals and commercial enterprises.

Data from the event indicates that power generation plummeted from more than 4,500 megawatts to as low as 24 megawatts as of 1:30 pm.

During the crisis, all 23 power generation plants connected to the grid reportedly lost output, which forced a zero power allocation to each of the 11 electricity distribution companies.

While the exact trigger for the failure has not been identified, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet released a detailed statement at the time of filing this report.

This development marks the first grid collapse recorded in 2026, occurring only a few weeks after a similar incident on December 29, 2025, which also resulted in extensive blackouts throughout the nation.
