The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has called on the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to step down if he is unable to support the political direction of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Waiya made these comments during a live broadcast on Muhasa Radio, addressing the growing friction caused by Gwarzo’s continued allegiance to the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, even as the Governor undergoes a political realignment.
The commissioner suggested that the Deputy Governor should follow the example of other officials who stepped away due to ideological differences. “What we are hoping for, just as we saw with some commissioners who felt uncomfortable and resigned, is that the deputy governor should also take an honourable step if he is no longer on the same political path with the governor,” Waiya stated.

He warned that a lack of unity at the top could breed suspicion within the administration, noting, “If you sit in an Executive Council meeting where people are discussing how to build Kano and there is suspicion about where such discussions may end up, then there is a problem. Governance is about trust.”
Waiya hinted that personal political goals might be at play, acknowledging that “many people have aspirations, including to become governor.”
However, he cautioned that “there is nothing wrong with ambition, but if interests begin to conflict with the direction of government, the most honourable option is to step aside and pursue those goals independently.”
While Waiya clarified that the choice to stay is ultimately a personal one, he shared his own perspective: “It is his decision. If he believes he can continue to work with the governor under the present circumstances, then that is fine. But if I were in that position, I would have left and faced my political journey clearly.”
The commissioner concluded by stressing that the administration is committed to its “Kano First” agenda, prioritizing state development over factional loyalties.
