Names Of 40 Suspects Detained Over Alleged Coup Plot To Overthrow Tinubu Government [FULL LIST]

Nigerian security agencies have finalized their probe into a violent conspiracy to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government, identifying 40 suspects linked to the plot, according to an authoritative report by PREMIUM TIMES.

The investigation, a joint effort by the Army Headquarters and the State Security Service (SSS), revealed a network comprising high-ranking military officers, a police officer, and several civilians.

These individuals are accused of roles ranging from “reconnaissance, funding, and propaganda operations.”

While many are in custody, a few key figures remain at large, including former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva and a retired officer, General Adamu, both of whom are accused of financing the operation.

On Monday, February 2, 2026, the Defence Headquarters confirmed the conclusion of the inquiry, noting that findings involve officers whose actions were “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

The conspiracy reportedly began as a plan to disrupt the May 29, 2023 inauguration but was delayed due to logistical and financial hurdles.

The plot was allegedly revitalized in 2025 following a transfer of nearly N1 billion linked to Mr. Sylva.

The conspirators reportedly aimed to assassinate the nation’s top leadership simultaneously. “They were waiting for a day when all of them would be in the country. Wherever they were, they would be assassinated,” a source revealed.

The target list included:

  • President Bola Tinubu

  • Vice President Kashim Shettima

  • Senate President Godswill Akpabio

  • Speaker Tajudeen Abbas

  • Service Chiefs and Commanders

The group allegedly utilized informants within the seat of power to track movements. “They have people inside the Villa who monitor the movements of these officials. The plan was to kill them at the same time and install a military government,” an insider added.
